Join Lincoln-based historian and geographer Andrew Jackson and ON/OFF design collective in exploring Lincoln’s Ermine Estate through the community archive.
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist holds a community archive for the Ermine Parish. This includes a great number of photos, plans, cuttings and other documents on the history of the church and the Ermine Estate. The earliest items date from the mid 1950s, when the estate was being built, up to the present day.
The development was completed in the early 1960s and was the City’s civic post-war housing showpiece. Initial plans for the Estate envisaged a total of 1350 homes and at present the Ermine forms almost 10% of Lincoln’s built-up area.
ON/OFF have been commissioned by Mansions of the Future to contribute to the first season of activity titled Urban Form: Social Architecture & The Commons (Nov 2019 – March 2020). Through events and activities, the collective will develop ideas for a public installation for and with citizens of the Ermine; this will be a collaboratively built structure that will enable local residents and ON/OFF to explore the potentials and possibilities of public spaces.
Historian and Geographer Dr Andrew Jackson is Head of Research at Bishop Grosseteste University; current research interests include twentieth-century urban and rural change, and local and regional history.
