Community Haystacks is a celebration of ancient common land in Lincoln, the West Common. It brings together residents to recreate the pre- mechanical hay harvest & revive traditions of scything & commoning. ‘Haystacks’ are nomadic events held to present & talk about rural issues & practices in urban places. The series started in 2013 organised by Kathrin Böhm, the Mansions of the Future Artist in Residence.
Below is the full programme for the Community Haystack event, in booking via this eventbrite page you are choosing to attend the 10-12pm Scything Workshop, not the 1230-230pm (please return to our main events page to select the late time slot). You are also welcome to join us for all other activities taking place throughout the day, as are your friends and family, booking is not required.
The event will take place whatever the weather so please dress appropriately and bring water as there are no food or drink facilities on site. Toilet facilities will be available at the Grandstand Community Centre’s Weighing Room, where there is also free onsite parking.
You must be aged 16+ or over to take part in the Scything Workshop and/or Scything Competition.

Commons and Commoning, Discussion 230-330pm
Bring your own picnic and join us for an informal public talk with invited guests about the history of the land and related cultures of commoning.
Scything Competition 330–430pm
With local food prizes for best windrow, best quality sward, best overall performance & style.
Haystack Building 12-430pm
Come along to help us build a large community haystack. Bring your own picnic and join a guided tour around the West Common at 1pm.
Throughout the Day
An area will be dedicated to scything, & open to those who already know how to scythe.
