Effy Harle: Growing Sideways

Effy Harle: Growing Sideways
Wednesday Sessions
Wednesday 10 April
Talk 5 – 6 pm, Seed & Plant Swap 4 – 5 pm
Free, booking required (for talk only)

Effy Harle will speak about art practices that stay ‘underground’, often undetected and sheltered from the public eye. Is it possible to develop meaningful art without nurturing the relationships that operate contemporary art institutions on the ground level? Harle will talk about some of her projects which often focus on the relationships that constitute the growing bed of art and take place in the backstreets of galleries, hidden staff rooms of institutions…

Join Effy before her talk for a seed and plant swap; drop in to trade vegetable seedlings, flowers and decorative plants. Plants can be traded or exchanged for donations which will go towards developing the programme of Mansions of the Future.

Effy Harle is a cultural worker and feminist art technician based in Nottingham. Harle has worked across curatorial, production and technician roles at Nottingham Contemporary and Eastside Projects. She is currently working on a project looking at female art technicians and developing opportunities to improve the gender balance of the art technician world. In 2018, together with Manual Labours and Finbar Prior she has designed and produced the Wandering Womb, a mobile kitchen and staff room. Previously she coordinated a programme of events with Narrow Marsh Residents Group and Nottingham Contemporary with artist Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad.

Part of Wednesday Sessions, a 6-month programme of talks curated by Mansions of the Future. The Wednesday Sessions will highlight artistic practices which are based on collaborative and collective processes, where art is actively and critically engaged with its immediate context. This series focuses on models of working which suggest new connections and ecologies between artists and non-artists, humans and nature, the individual and the collective, and modes of operation often stemming from feminist practices.

You are welcome to join us for both the seed and plant swap and artist talk or to come to just one of the two events. Booking is only required for the talk, due to seating limitations.
